The fine print, in plain English

Rental terms

No surprises and no buried clauses. Here's exactly how an eVans BC rental works — what's included, what's on you, and what happens if plans change. Read it once and you'll know where you stand.

Eligibility & driver licence

You must be at least 21 and hold a valid driver's licence. For our larger vans — the BrightDrop 600, Ford E-Transit and Mercedes eSprinter — a standard BC Class 5 (or equivalent) is all you need; none of our fleet requires an air-brake endorsement. Every driver who'll get behind the wheel must be named on the rental (see "Use of vehicle" below). We verify the licence at pickup or before a delivery, so bring the physical card. Out-of-province and out-of-country licences are welcome as long as they're current and in English or accompanied by a translation.

Reservations & payment

Nothing is charged while you're building a booking. Your card is only charged when you confirm — that's the rental rate plus a refundable $300 security hold. The hold isn't a fee: it sits on your card to cover the deposit and is released within 3 business days of return, assuming the van comes back in the shape it left. Rates are quoted in CAD and include charging; applicable taxes are shown before you confirm. Weekly and monthly rentals are billed at the discounted long-term rate automatically — you don't need to ask.

Charging

Charging is included in your rate — public DC fast charging, Level 2 top-ups, the lot. You'll find a charge card in the glovebox; tap it at any supported station across BC and the cost comes back to us. This is fair-use: it covers normal commercial driving, not reselling power or charging vehicles that aren't ours. Every van leaves the depot charged and ready. We ask that you return it with at least 20% on the battery, or a small top-up fee may apply — same idea as a fuel policy, just cleaner.

Cancellation & changes

Plans shift — we get it. Cancel for free any time up to 24 hours before pickup and we release the full charge, including the hold. Inside the 24-hour window, the first rental day is non-refundable; the rest is returned. Need to push your dates, swap vans or change a depot? Adjust the booking online or call us — there's no change fee, you'll just pay any difference in the rate. Delivery bookings follow the same 24-hour rule, measured from your scheduled delivery window.

Use of vehicle

The van is yours to work hard, within reason. Only drivers named on the rental may operate it — no handing the keys to someone who isn't on the agreement. No subletting, re-renting or using the van for ride-hail or courier platforms it isn't booked for. Keep it lawful: stay inside BC unless we've agreed otherwise in writing, respect load ratings, and don't use the van to haul hazardous goods, tow beyond the rated capacity, or take it off-road or off-pavement. Smoking and vaping aren't allowed in the cab or cargo area.

Damage & protection

Add the $0-deductible protection at booking and you're covered for accidental damage with nothing out of pocket — the cleanest option for a busy crew. Skip it, and your $300 deposit is the first line against damage; if repairs run higher, you're responsible for the difference up to the value of the vehicle. Either way, normal wear-and-tear is on us — that's the cost of doing business. Damage from negligence, unauthorized drivers, or use outside these terms isn't covered by either option. We document every van with photos at pickup and return so there's a clear record both ways.

Roadside

Every rental includes 24/7 roadside, included in the rate — flat tire, lockout, a tow if it ever comes to that, and EV-specific help if the battery runs low. One number, any hour, anywhere in BC. If you're stuck, we'll get you a charge-to or a swap van so the job keeps moving. The roadside line is printed on the charge card and inside the glovebox folder.

Returns & late fees

Bring the van back to the agreed depot by your return time, charged to at least 20% and cleared of your gear. A short grace window is built in — no clock-watching over a few minutes. Beyond that, late returns are billed at the daily rate per extra day (or part of a day) the van is out. If you need more time, give us a heads-up before your window closes and we'll usually just extend the booking at the standard rate rather than charge a late fee. For delivery rentals, the same applies to the scheduled pickup window at your site.

Liability

Vans are supplied insured for road use as required in BC. You're responsible for fines, tolls, impound costs and any penalties that arise during your rental, and for losses caused by use outside these terms — including driving while impaired, by an unauthorized driver, or contrary to the law. eVans BC isn't liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost income, missed jobs or cargo, except where the law says otherwise. Nothing here limits rights you have under applicable BC consumer law. If anything in these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.

Common questions

The ones we get asked most

Do I need a special licence for the bigger vans?

No. A standard BC Class 5 (or equivalent) covers the whole fleet — BrightDrop 600, E-Transit, Lion 6 and eSprinter included. No air-brake endorsement needed.

When does the $300 hold come back?

Within 3 business days of returning the van, assuming it comes back undamaged. It's a hold, not a fee — it never becomes a charge unless there's damage and you didn't take the $0-deductible option.

What if I bring it back late?

A short grace window is built in. Past that, extra time is billed at the daily rate. Best move: call before your window closes and we'll usually just extend the booking at the standard rate.

Is charging really included?

Yes — fair-use public and Level 2 charging across BC, paid with the charge card in the glovebox. Just return the van with at least 20% on the battery.

Can a coworker drive the van too?

Absolutely — they just need to be named on the rental and hold a valid licence. There's no charge to add authorized drivers.
